Allergen note
Beef gravy is generally well-tolerated, but always check ingredients for added wheat (gluten) or dairy, which are common allergens. Introduce it separately after individual ingredients have been safely introduced.
How to serve
For infants over 8 months, mix a teaspoon of smooth gravy into mashed vegetables or pureed meat. For toddlers, serve 1-2 tablespoons alongside soft, bite-sized foods for dipping or pouring.
Preparation
Simmer lean ground beef or finely shredded beef in low-sodium broth, then puree until completely smooth for infants or finely mince for toddlers, ensuring all fat is skimmed and salt is omitted.
Texture and choking risk
Beef gravy is low risk but should be smooth, thin, and served in small amounts mixed into mashed foods, not alone, to prevent overfilling a small mouth. Always supervise meals closely.
Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
Track first tastes and reactions
Log when your child first tries beef gravy, note any reaction and see it in the allergen tracker.
