🧂 Basil pesto

Allergen note

Basil pesto often contains pine nuts and dairy (cheese), which are common allergens; introduce a tiny amount on its own after individually introducing each ingredient.

How to serve

For infants 8+ months, mix 1/2 teaspoon into mashed vegetables or pasta; for toddlers, toss 1-2 teaspoons with whole wheat pasta or spread thinly on toast.

Preparation

Steam or blanch basil to reduce nitrates, then puree pesto until completely smooth and omit nuts and cheese for safety.

Texture and choking risk

Due to pesto's thick, pasty consistency, always thin it significantly with water, olive oil, or pasta water and mix thoroughly into meals to prevent a choking hazard. Never serve it by the spoonful and always supervise your child while they eat.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
