🍎 Grapes

FruitFrom 6 monthsSeason: Mediterranean: Aug–Oct; Chile: Dec–Apr

Allergen note

Grapes rarely cause allergies. A few children, often those already allergic to peaches or other fruits, react with an itchy mouth, hives or swelling; if that happens, stop offering grapes and talk to your pediatrician.

How to serve

From 6 months, offer large grapes quartered lengthwise and squashed flat, or mashed. From 9–12 months, as the pincer grasp develops, give quartered pieces a few at a time; toddlers and preschoolers still need grapes quartered, served alongside a meal or snack.

Preparation

Wash grapes well and choose seedless ones, or cut them open and remove the seeds. Cut each grape lengthwise into quarters, smaller for very large grapes; peeling helps young babies who struggle with the skin. Skip frozen whole grapes, which are hard and slippery.

Texture and choking risk

Whole grapes are one of the most common causes of choking in young children, because their size, shape and slippery skin can block the airway. Quarter them lengthwise until at least age 5, never serve them whole or simply halved, and always supervise seated eating.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
