🥛 Edam cheese

Milk, dairy & formulaFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Edam is made from cow's milk, a common food allergen, and the app lists it from 12 months, partly because it is fairly salty. If your toddler already eats other dairy without problems, start with a little grated Edam and watch for hives, vomiting or swelling.

How to serve

From 12 months, offer Edam finely grated over pasta or vegetables, melted into an omelet or quesadilla, or as very thin, wide slices your toddler can tear. Keep portions to about a tablespoon grated and pair it with low-salt foods such as steamed vegetables or fruit.

Preparation

Remove the red or black wax coating completely before grating or slicing, since it is not edible. Choose Edam made from pasteurized milk, grate it finely or slice it paper-thin, and melt it into warm dishes while your toddler is still learning to chew.

Texture and choking risk

Firm, rubbery cubes of Edam can squash into a plug that blocks the airway, so skip cubes and thick sticks for young toddlers. Offer it grated, melted or in very thin slices, move to small thin pieces as chewing improves, and always supervise meals.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
