🥛 Cottage cheese

Milk, dairy & formulaFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Cottage cheese is made from cow's milk, a common food allergen, and the app lists it from 12 months. It is rich in milk protein, so if your toddler already has other dairy without a reaction, start with a spoonful and watch for hives, vomiting or swelling.

How to serve

From 12 months, offer a spoonful of plain, full-fat cottage cheese on a preloaded spoon, mixed with mashed fruit or vegetables, or spread on toast. Toddlers can also pick up the soft curds with their fingers; keep portions to a few tablespoons.

Preparation

Buy plain cottage cheese made from pasteurized milk, ideally a lower-sodium brand, and use it before the date on the tub. It can be served cold straight from the fridge, mashed or blended for a smoother texture, or stirred into pancake batter, scrambled eggs or pasta sauce.

Texture and choking risk

Cottage cheese is soft and a low choking risk, but the slippery curds and lumpy texture can make some toddlers gag at first. Mash or blend it if needed, avoid stirring in whole grapes, add no whole or chopped nuts before 5 years, and always supervise your toddler sitting upright.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
