🥛 Feta cheese

Milk, dairy & formulaFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Feta is traditionally made from sheep's milk, sometimes mixed with goat's milk, while feta-style cheeses may use cow's milk. These milk proteins are closely related, so a child with cow's milk allergy usually reacts to feta too. The app lists it from 12 months because it is very salty.

How to serve

From 12 months, crumble a teaspoon or two of rinsed feta into scrambled eggs, mashed vegetables or pasta, or mash it with avocado as a spread for toast. Because feta is very salty, treat it as an occasional flavor boost rather than an everyday food.

Preparation

Choose feta made from pasteurized milk and check the label. Rinse it and soak it in fresh water for about 30 minutes, or longer, to draw out some of the brine salt, then pat it dry and crumble it finely or bake it into omelets or vegetable fritters.

Texture and choking risk

Feta is soft and crumbly, so it is easier to manage than firm cheeses, but large chunks can break into pieces your toddler cannot control. Crumble it finely or mash it into other foods, avoid big cubes, and always supervise meals.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
