Ingredients

  • 1/2 tin sardines in spring water (drained)
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 slice whole grain bread (lightly toasted)

Method

  1. Mash sardines and ripe avocado together in a small bowl with lemon juice.
  2. Lightly toast whole grain bread.
  3. Spread sardine-avocado mix thinly onto toast.

How to serve by age

6–8 months

Cut toast into long strips (1.5 inches wide by 3 inches long). Hold-size check: it should stick out above a closed fist, which is what the palmar (whole-hand) grasp needs at this stage.

9–12 months

Cut toast strips into small bite-sized squares. These smaller pieces are sized for the pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger) that develops around 9 months.

Paediatric note

Lightly toasting bread prevents it from becoming a gummy ball in the roof of the mouth, reducing choking risk.
