ABC Soft Muffins (Apple, Banana, Carrot)

Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup finely grated carrot
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 ripe banana (mashed)
- 2 tbsp melted olive oil or coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
Method
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Mix wet ingredients (applesauce, banana, oil) in one bowl and dry in another.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients, then fold in grated carrot.
- Spoon into muffin tins and bake for 18-20 minutes.
How to serve by age
6–8 months
Slice muffin top-to-bottom into thick finger-width strips. Hold-size check: it should stick out above a closed fist, which is what the palmar (whole-hand) grasp needs at this stage.
9–12 months
Crumble slightly or cut into small 1cm pieces. These smaller pieces are sized for the pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger) that develops around 9 months.
Paediatric note
Grating or steaming raw carrots before adding to muffins ensures soft texture and eliminates raw carrot choking hazards.
