🥬 Cabbage

VegetablesFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Cabbage rarely causes allergic reactions. It is listed here from 12 months, so start then with a spoonful or two of well-cooked cabbage: like other cabbage-family vegetables, it can cause gas or looser stools while your toddler gets used to it.

How to serve

From 12 months, stir finely shredded, well-cooked cabbage into soups, stews, rice, pasta or mashed potato, or mix it into soft vegetable patties your toddler can hold. Toddlers who chew well can try very thinly shredded raw cabbage in a slaw dressed with a little plain yogurt.

Preparation

Remove the tough outer leaves and the hard core, rinse, then slice thinly. Steam, sauté or braise for 8–15 minutes until silky and tender. Skip salt and sugar and season with a little oil, unsalted butter, cumin or dill instead; sauerkraut and kimchi are salty, so keep them for occasional small tastes.

Texture and choking risk

Raw cabbage and large pieces of cooked leaf are fibrous and hard to break down, so toddlers may gag or struggle with them. Cook cabbage until very soft, shred it finely or cut it into small pieces, offer raw cabbage only very thinly shredded, and always supervise while your child eats sitting down.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
