🥬 Okra

VegetablesFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Okra is not a common allergen, and reactions are rare. In this app it is listed from 12 months; the first time, offer a small amount of well-cooked okra on its own and watch for hives, itching or swelling around the mouth.

How to serve

From 12 months, offer steamed or roasted okra halved lengthwise so the seeds show, which gives your toddler an easy piece to grip. It also works stirred into soft stews, tomato sauces or rice dishes, with no added salt.

Preparation

Rinse and trim off the woody stem cap, then steam or simmer the pods for about 8–10 minutes, or roast them, until very tender and easy to squash. The slippery texture is normal and blends into stews; skip breaded, deep-fried or heavily salted okra.

Texture and choking risk

Raw or undercooked okra is tough and fibrous for new chewers. Cook it until it squashes easily between your fingers, halve pods lengthwise for self-feeding or chop them into dishes, and always supervise while your child eats seated.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
