🥛 Mizithra

Milk, dairy & formulaFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Mizithra is a Greek whey cheese made from sheep's or goat's milk, sometimes mixed with cow's milk. These milk proteins are very similar, so children with a cow's milk allergy usually react to it too. When you offer it after 12 months, start with a small amount and watch for hives, vomiting or swelling.

How to serve

From 12 months, spread fresh, soft mizithra thinly on toast, stir it into pasta, or mash it with fruit or vegetables. Dry, aged mizithra is hard and salty, so use only a light sprinkle, finely grated over pasta or vegetables. It is listed from 12 months mainly because many types are salty.

Preparation

Choose mizithra made from pasteurized milk; homemade and village cheeses are often made from raw milk. Fresh mizithra spoils quickly, so keep it refrigerated and use it within a few days. Don't add salt to dishes that contain mizithra, especially the dry, aged kind.

Texture and choking risk

Fresh mizithra is soft and crumbly and easy to manage when spread thinly or mixed into food. Dry mizithra is hard, so grate it finely and never give chunks or wedges. Always supervise while your child sits upright.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
