🥜 Green beans

Legumes, nuts & seedsFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Green beans rarely cause allergic reactions, although children with other legume allergies occasionally react. When you add them from 12 months, offer a small portion the first time alongside familiar foods and watch for hives, swelling or tummy upset.

How to serve

From 12 months, serve soft-cooked green beans whole or split lengthwise for dipping, or cut them into 1.2 cm½-inch pieces to practice picking up. Toss them with a little olive oil or butter, stir them into pasta or rice, or bake them into mini frittatas.

Preparation

Trim the stem ends and pull off any tough strings, then steam or boil for 6–10 minutes until very tender, since undercooked beans can upset little stomachs. Frozen beans work well; with canned, choose no-salt-added and rinse. Season with herbs or lemon instead of salt.

Texture and choking risk

Raw or crisp-cooked green beans are firm and fibrous and hard for toddlers to chew into small pieces. Cook them until they squash easily, cut them into short pieces or strips, and have your child eat seated and supervised.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
