Sugars & sweeteners for babies and toddlers

Babies do not need added sugar, and health guidance suggests leaving sugars and sweeteners out of their food until at least 2 years of age. Honey should not be given before 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. Use these pages to check starting ages, and reach for naturally sweet foods such as ripe banana, grated apple or mashed dates instead.
