Allergen note
Bread bowls often contain wheat (a common allergen) and may contain dairy, egg, or sesame; introduce a small piece of plain bread first to monitor for reactions.
How to serve
For infants (6+ months), serve a soft, hollowed-out bread bowl half filled with 2-3 tablespoons of puree for self-feeding; for toddlers (12+ months), offer a quarter of a bowl filled with ¼ cup of a thicker stew they can scoop.
Preparation
Steam or bake the bread until very soft, then hollow out and fill with a puree or very soft, age-appropriate food to minimize choking risk. Always ensure the bread is gummable and served in manageable, pea-sized pieces.
Texture and choking risk
Bread bowls pose a choking risk; always remove the tough, chewy bread bowl itself and only offer the soft, bite-sized interior filling to your child under close supervision.
Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
Track first tastes and reactions
Log when your child first tries bread bowls, note any reaction and see it in the allergen tracker.
