🥬 Artichoke

VegetablesFrom 12 months

Allergen note

Artichoke is not a common allergen. It belongs to the daisy family, so children with ragweed, mugwort or chamomile allergies may rarely react. From 12 months, offer a small taste of well-cooked heart and watch for hives, itching, swelling or vomiting.

How to serve

Artichoke is listed from 12 months. Offer soft cooked heart mashed into potato, stirred into pasta or risotto, or cut into small, thin strips for your toddler to pick up. From about age 2, your child can scrape the tender flesh off a cooked leaf with their teeth while you watch.

Preparation

Cut off the stem end and tough outer leaves, then steam or simmer the artichoke for 25–40 minutes until a knife slides easily into the base. Scoop out the fuzzy choke completely and use the tender heart. Rinse jarred or canned hearts well, and skip marinated ones.

Texture and choking risk

The tough, fibrous leaves, their spiky tips and the hairy inner choke can all get stuck in a young child's throat. Serve the well-cooked heart mashed or in small, soft pieces, give leaves only to older toddlers under close watch, and keep your child seated.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
