🍗 Salmon

Meat, fish & eggsFrom 6 monthsSeason: Available year-round

Allergen note

Fish is a common allergen, so from around 6 months offer a little salmon on its own at first, then keep serving it regularly if there's no reaction. Low in mercury and rich in omega-3 fats (DHA), salmon is one of the best fish choices for babies.

How to serve

At 6–8 months, offer soft flakes mashed into potato, avocado or rice, or finger-sized salmon and potato cakes to hold. From 9 months, let your baby pick up small, soft flakes; from 12 months, serve flaked salmon with pasta, rice or on toast.

Preparation

Bake, steam or poach salmon until it is opaque all the way through and flakes easily (63°C145°F/145°F). Remove the skin for young babies, then run your fingers through the flesh to find and pull out the pin bones. Cook it without salt; lemon, dill or garlic add flavor.

Texture and choking risk

The main hazard with salmon is its small, flexible pin bones, which are easy to miss. Check every piece carefully by hand, serve soft flakes or cakes rather than firm chunks, and always supervise your baby while eating.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
