🍎 Papaya

FruitFrom 6 monthsSeason: Tropics: all year

Allergen note

Papaya is not a common allergen. Rarely, children with a latex allergy react to it, and its juice can cause a mild rash around the mouth. Offer a small amount at first and watch for any reaction.

How to serve

At 6–9 months, offer ripe papaya as long spears about the size of an adult finger, or mashed on a spoon. From about 9 months, cut small bite-sized pieces for the pincer grasp; toddlers can spear small cubes with a fork.

Preparation

Pick papaya with yellow-orange skin that yields to gentle pressure, then wash, peel and scoop out all the black seeds. Ripe papaya needs no cooking; cook firm or green papaya until very soft. Rolling slippery spears in finely ground oats makes them easier to grip.

Texture and choking risk

Ripe papaya is soft and easy to mash with the gums, but slippery pieces and firm, underripe chunks are harder to manage. Remove every seed, serve only soft, ripe fruit in age-appropriate shapes, and always supervise your seated baby.

Starting ages are typical guidance for healthy, full-term babies who show signs of readiness. Your paediatrician may advise differently, especially where there is a family history of allergy.
